We have discovered some potential new agents for the treatment of psoriasis, a chronic skin disease affecting 2-3% of the population of the Western World. The first series of compounds have undergone extensive in vitro biological testing and have recently been patent protected. Our compounds target a real need for new and effective compounds through intervention in biochemical pathways which are selectively over-expressed in psoriatic lesions. The aim of our spin-out company, Sunderland Pharmaceuticals, will be to develop these compounds further, with a view to establishing the first in a portfolio of new agents for the treatment of psoriasis, the market for which is expected to grow to an estimated $3.3 billion by 2013.
The North East is a popular location for the manufacturing sites of pharmaceutical companies, but there is little pharmaceutical research and development carried out here. The establishment of Sunderland Pharmaceuticals would help to redress this balance.
